Carlsbad, CA.

Carlsbad, CA, USA – April 16, 1999 – RIS today released a major new upgrade to its Reference Manager® software that transforms the popular bibliographic program into the most powerful online research tool available.

Called Reference Manager version 9, the new release comprises three robust research tools in one program. Version 9 delivers the industry's easiest access to reference data on the Internet, eliminates the tedious tasks of formatting bibliographies and comes with the complete set of research tools professionals expect.

Reference Manager is the leading bibliographic management software for corporate, government and academic researchers, librarians, writers and students who need to find, import, manage and perfectly format reference data for professional journals, grants, dissertations, thesis, CVs, research papers and regulatory filings.

"We are pleased to offer our customers easy access to hundreds of diverse information sources with one simple interface," said David Kochalko, president and CEO of Research Information Systems. "We are experiencing an explosion of quality research information on the Internet. With version 9, our customers can now access these Internet libraries, many of which are Z39.50 sites, directly from Reference Manager." Z39.50 is an international standard that defines a protocol for computer-to-computer information retrieval. The Z39.50 standard is widely used among library and other information providers to make their databases available on the Internet.

Internet Reference Searcher
With Reference Manager version 9, building a database has never been easier. Users can search PubMed or hundreds of Internet libraries from Reference Manager and create databases instantly. Reference Manager ships with immediate access to 625 databases from over 300 Internet libraries and users can easily add new sites. These Internet libraries include academic, government, and public library catalogs as well as popular Web-based subscription services from Ovid Technologies, SilverPlatter and OCLC, among others (subscriber account and password required). Users can search up to 255 Internet libraries simultaneously and save search queries for frequent use.

"Reference Manager represents a quantum leap in bibliographic software! Its new Web searching capabilities make the usually laborious task of finding, downloading and formatting Internet references something I can easily manage," said Edward Remler, professor of physics, at the College of William and Mary.

Better Bibliography Builder
Reference Manager version 9 offers significant improvements to its Cite While You Writeä technology, the most advanced bibliography generation capability available today. The new Cite While You Write window looks like Reference Manager, allowing users to view complete references and to "click–sort" on the column headings for easy access to their references all without leaving their word processor. Version 9 also supports new footnote style formatting and now ships with bibliographic styles for over 450 journals and publications. New "wizards" make it easier to find, create, and modify bibliographic styles.

"Reference Manager is absolutely essential for my work. Cite While You Write is a must-have feature no researcher should do without," said Dr. Kuni Suzuki, director, Neuroscience Center, University of North Carolina.

Best Database Manager
Reference Manager’s database capabilities are unmatched and include:

•  Spell check
•  Synonyms for authors’ names, keywords and periodicals
•  Custom duplicate detection
•  Scan on import to build keyword list
•  More reference types
•  Unlimited database size
•  Multiple links to the Web

With version 9, Reference Manager users can add more information to their references with new unlimited text fields. Users can build a list of terms to preserve during import. For example, they can keep "DNA" in all capital letters when other casing changes. Version 9 lets users assign a default reprint status when importing references to track articles in their collections and those on request.

"Everyone who writes articles for publication in medical literature will love Reference Manager 9. It easily manages my database of more than 10,000 entries and searches PubMed and over 300 Internet libraries. It’s a life saver," said Dr. David Gutterman, professor of medicine and physiology, at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
